CRUISE SHIP SPIRIT OF NANTUCKET INVESTIGATION CONTINUES

PORTSMOUTH, Va. -  Coast Guard investigators are on scene where the cruise ship Spirit of Nantucket went aground in the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) in Virginia Beach, Va.

The vessel is in stable condition and is no longer taking on water. Temporary repairs were made and a salvage plan is being developed by the vessel owners Cruise West.

A safety zone is still in effect between the Great Bridge Albemarle Sound Light 25 (LLNR 37330) and the Great Bridge Albemarle Sound Light 27 (LLNR 37335)and being enforced by the Coast Guard.

This area of the ICW is closed to all commercial vessel traffic. The area is also closed to recreational boats that have a draft of more than six-feet.

The Army Corps of Engineers located a submerged object approximately eight-feet below surface. The object is marked and will be removed.

There is no additional pollution associated with the grounding of the vessel.

For any question regarding the vessel passengers or salvage operation please call Andrew Wilson at (212) 308-8880.
