Salute to Disabled Veterans
North Myrtle Beach News
By Chris Carbone, Seacoast Anglers Association
OCTOBER 13, 2009 NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC ― The 1st Annual “Salute to Disabled Veterans” fishing day was Saturday, October 3rd on Cherry Grove Pier which also happened to be “National Make It Happen Day.”
Chris Carbone, President SAA said, “Like our HOOK a Kid on Fishing program, our Board of Directors thought we should try a similiar program with Disabled Veterans. This Association is dedicated for the purpose of promoting saltwater fishing and to conserve our local fishing waters for all to enjoy! At the same time we decided to take Disabled Veterans fishing on Cherry Grove Pier as a way of giving back to the Veterans who sacrificed so much for us. Thus, the Salute to Disabled Veterans.”
The Seacoast Anglers Association, VFW Post 10804 and Cherry Grove Pier sponsored this event. Twenty-seven Disabled Veterans attended what turned out to be a beautiful day of enjoying the seashore on the pier. About half of the Veterans fished on the pier and many just sat and enjoyed the day. The usual pier fish were caught, spot, bluefish, flounder, sharks etc.
Most of the Veterans were Veterans of Korea and WWII. They were the entire realm of the military from nurses to combat troops to officers. One family came from as far away as Fayetteville, NC.
Nationwide there are over 1.3 million members of the Disable American Veterans Association. WWII veterans but are declining by 250,000 per year and Korean War Veterans by 135 thousand per year.
“We started preparing for this event back in March raising funds and making all the arrangements. It was a club effort. Part of the funds came from a grant from the VFW Men's Auxiliary Post 10804 in Little River and some of the funds came from the sale of raffle tickets and donations,” said Carbone. “The VFW Post 10804 also located the Disabled Veterans in the area. On the day of the event, SAA had 20 volunteers and the VFW had 6. Many of the vets were Korea Veterans and most were WWII Veterans. To the best of my knowledge, there was only one Iraqi Veteran attending.”
Steve Page, SSA Secretary, is a Disabled Veteran and was instrumental in structuring the event.
The box lunch for this event was contributed by "Country Roads," Rt 701, Loris and the Seacoast Anglers Association of North Myrtle Beach. Some of the transportation was provided by Summit Ridge in NMB and the rest got there with the help of their family.
The Cherry Grove Pier donated the tackle for the Veterans to fish and the venue as well.
