| This past Friday I had the good fortune of tricking someone into going fishing again. The Redfish were very eager to eat even though the water temperature was only 48 degrees, kind of windy and with the big tides of the full moon still somewhat muddy. Normally we have pretty clear water until sometime in April when the water temp bets back into the 60's. The Redfish are being constantly attacked by the Dolphins so they are very sensitive to boat activity. On the incoming high water we used the take the trolling motor through the grass on the edge of main rivers and look for the grass shaking like rabbits running through briar's power pole down and cast rattling cork rigs tipped with a Gulp Shrimp ahead of the direction of the moving grass. The key is to make sure the shrimp falls to the bottom in the thick grass. If the Redfish are still in the area it does not take long for the cork to sink. Once the tide was falling good the other very exciting technique was to ease along the high water white shell rakes where the water was dumping out of the marsh and spot the huge schools holding in the slight eddie water on the edge of the current rips. We cast 1/4 ounce Whoopass jigs in the olive color up current and bounced them along the bottom. Most of the fish were just in the slot but with constant action everyone was happy. We did find the jumbo fish over the slot and caught them with jigs but once a fish was hooked the rest of the school moved away. No pictures this time but soon I should have some to post as the weather is looking great and I have a few trips this week. |
