NC plans to increase flounder regulations on recreational anglers but not commercial fishermen

The state is seeking public comments on its proposal to amend the NC Fisheries Management Plan for southern flounder, a plan that will likely include strong new recreational regulations for flounder anglers but may not include any new commercial fishing restrictions.

Both the NC Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF) and a southern flounder advisory committee are recommending to the Marine Fisheries Commission (MFC) an increase in the minimum recreational size limit for flounder to 15 inches, and a decrease in the creel limit to six flounder per angler per day.

The DMF and the advisory committee are not recommending any changes to commercial flounder fishing regulations. According to the DMF, recently implemented regulations designed to help protect sea turtles have already restricted commercial flounder fishing enough to comply with state law.

State law passed in June says that the MFC must end overfishing of a troubled stock within two years of adopting a fishery management plan for the overfished species. A 2009 stock assessment for southern flounder found the stock still overfished, as it has been for many years.

The meeting schedule is as follows:
