Go Scouting and bring home some dinner. I had the misfortune of having my charter folks not making their appointment and not letting me in on the change so I decided to do some looking around in a few areas I have not fished in awhile. The water is muddy with the big tides and on low tide the flats are full of mullet making the water like chocolate milk. To my surprise nice sized Redfish were holding around oyster beds in less than 6 inches of water. The water was so shallow that I could spot fish with their dorsal fins out of the water. When the boat came close the mullet would go crazy and fly everywhere and the Redfish would go on the move but not in hyperspeed. To know the difference between the Redfish and mullet besides the dorsal fins showing sometimes with the Redfish you just had to notice the speed, the mullet would blow up and scoot, the Redfish would spook then settle into a steady push. A well place cast with a 1/4 ounce jig tipped with a Gulp Shrimp produced bites most of the time. Not an aggressive bite but the Redfish would pick up the Gulp as they pushed along the shore. Many of the Redfish were close to the 23" slot max and some were close to 27". The fall is my favorite time of year in the Lowcountry. The water is cooling and the Redfish have begun to eat like we are going to have a cold winter. I even heard a report today of one of the other boats on the dock catching a load of the jumbo's out in the sound. Time to go get them.
