Fish Finder,
Capt Mark Brown in Mt. Pleasant and myself, Wes Covington are Vice Chair and Chair of the SC Chapter. We formed and incorporated the chapter last year with the help of the RFA national staff and board. We want Capt. Keith to be on board with us to represent you all up there, and I'm sure this will be done at our next meeting as all of us know of him and see how passionate and knowledgable he is on the politics of this mind numbing subject.
We post a lot over on charleston fishing dot com, but I will try to post more here as Capt Keith has been working so hard keeping all of you in the loop on what's going on.
We have accomplished a lot considering that we're all volunteer and are a new chapter. We put a lot of attention and political heat on the council members when they tried to close 98-240ft, and your local chambers of commerce and county council were all a part of that. Everyone contributed to that, and we pushed it at the statehouse and got a lot of attention from the council members, which then overflowed into other states. Next thing you know, they were trying to find ways to get themselves out of the large area closure alternatives. Meanwhile, we lost snowy grouper and 240+.
It is like plugging holes in a dam with all your fingers and toes and then still having more that you can't plug. We are getting there though.
The key is focusing our resources on the actual problem and solution- the law. Representative Tim Scott is fully aware of the issues and understands that RFA will be getting the flexibility bill to fix magnuson reintroduced as soon as the budget debate gets over with in the US House. This has to be our focus. We've got to get all our US Congressmen behind this along with our two Senators.
Without the arbitrary timeline accelerating the management to light speed and without the joke of a standard for science controlling it all, we wouldn't have these fake crisis's popping up where catch shares or mid-season closures of sea bass or interim rule snapper closures or area closures would even be considered.
It's all coming from the broken law, and until the law is fixed, this stuff will come down the pipe to every single species that we care about. It's like that dam- I'm telling you. You plug all the holes you can- EPA permits for charter boats' deck wash, bottom closure, no vehicles on Cape Hatteras national seashore, snapper closure, catch shares, MPA's, grouper closure, another hole pops thru and we lose snowys and bluelines.... it will go on and on and on. UNTIL the law is fixed.
That is our focus- getting the public to understand that the problem is not a lack of fish but a lack of data and a lack of common sense in the law. Our fish stocks are incredibly healthy, but our fisheries, which includes US- are not! Our economy is getting killed by the senseless provisions of this law that were put in entirely by ideologically driven special interests and financial interests that want the ocean privatized and US OFF THE WATER...
I can name groups that have betrayed us and who continue to put out spin and lie to us. There is no need. We started the SC chapter of RFA because RFA was a group we knew where they stood- ALWAYS. Their mission statement is cut and dry. Safeguard the rights of anglers, sportfishing jobs and longterm fisheries sustainability. PERIOD.
