I have gone to many of these meetings in the last two years including being among the 5000 fishermen that went to the capital to protest. I have sat in the chair in front of members of the council holding the meeting, giving my opinion, only to have them look at me like they can't wait to say, "Next!"
None of it has done any good as we are preaching to the choir over and over. The more we do this, the less people show up because they all realize it is fruitless. All these councils are just doing what they HAVE to do and they are meeting their legal requirements. Their mind is already made up. They are very self-serving councils, typical government agencies. The more controversy they create, the more they are needed to explain (or seem to explain) their position on issues. Works great for them but the public be damned!
We have the power to get the uninfomed public involved, which is the audience we should be looking for. If everyone of us that has a boat decided to ride on the waterway as an organized demonstration on a particular day, we could have several hundred boats that would attract the attention of the TV and print media. With all the clubs on this coast (where have they been)? and the commercial folks on this coast, we can make an impact. My opinion is that once the rest of the world knows what is going on and how many "jobs" are being lost because of their flawed decisions, then and only then will we gain on it. Right now we are only spinning our props!
